I’m Now On deviantART. But First…

on November 29, 2012

1. I finally watched that “Gangnam Style“ video that is apparently the most-watched and most-liked video on YouTube. My first thought upon seeing it was, “What’s so special about this? This looks like any other weird foreign music video on YouTube.” Well, it’s still not bad, and I need to work on my ferret character’s design before I start actually drawing the comic, so here’s this.

2. I’m now on deviantART under the name “FerretWilliams”! I’ve been there for 5 years as “willyums”, but I hardly posted anything. Now, with the beginning of my new Ferret Williams comics, I’m going to try it again. In May of this year, deviantART finally started offering the ability to CHANGE YOUR USERNAME, with a premium membership. I didn’t find out about that until I was about to create a new account and decided to check once more if it was possible. Last time I checked was in December 2011 when I was changing my username on every site I’m active on. Since I wasn’t active on DA at that time, I saw no reason to create an empty account.
I will post ALL of the new comics on there, in addition to here, FurAffinity and Inkbunny. These community websites also get the comics earlier(if they’re finished before the deadline), as well as additional art that I wouldn’t normally post here, like the first draft sketch of the above picture that I rejected because it was more anthropomorphic than I envision the character. If you don’t know which community website to use, here’s a one-question quiz to figure it out: Are you a furry? If yes, go with FurAffinity. If no(or you don’t know), go with deviantArt. Inkbunny is good, too, but is newer and thus doesn’t have as large of a community or as wide a variety of art yet.

3. In other news, I’ve noticed two other comics that have gone a similar route as mine, with the announcements all within 2 months of each other. Liz Boriss of Broken Plot Device, Tim Buckley of Ctrl+Alt+Del, and I have all decided independently that our story-based comics will be better off as complete stories, and to have a wider variety of stuff. I don’t know if this is the beginning of a trend or if this is something that many webcomic creators have done before us, but the timing surprised me a little. Granted, I’m nowhere NEAR as popular as them, especially Tim. I have roughly 600 subscribers across various websites and less than 100 visitors/day to the main website, so I’m hesitant to even include my comic in this coincidence and call it a trend. Liz is doing a variety of projects and releasing them as they’re complete, while Tim is focusing more on different characters as a gag-a-day comic(they were previously side characters) for the regular updates and rebooting the continuity of the storyline-based characters and releasing stories as they’re complete. I’m focusing more on a new character in a different setting while posting a variety of projects as they’re complete(including animations). I’m curious if we might see a surge in changes to several comics, mostly inspired by Ctrl+Alt+Del, as it’s the giant. Small updates with a long storyline have worked well for online cartoonists for over a decade, but if done right, large chunks farther apart can still draw in the readers and be more enjoyable for both parties. This typically doesn’t grow an audience as well, which is why I’m also doing regular black and white comics(among many other reasons), but it can be done.

I Don’t Like The Word “Hiatus”

on November 26, 2012
Posted In: Blog

I’m avoiding the word “hiatus” like the plague. Whenever a comic goes on hiatus, the chances of it coming back are extremely low, which is why I include a specific return date of December 31 for the comic. Since “hiatus” carries so much fear and uncertainty, I’m using the word “hibernation”. It’s quite appropriate, really, since part of the reason is for sleep.

Sleep has been my focus since I started the comic’s hibernation. So far, the results are promising. Up until Friday, I’ve still been getting out of bed around 2:00 pm(HORRIBLE time, but normal for me), but the actual wake-up time has been getting earlier. It takes me a while to motivate myself to get out of bed, especially since I don’t have to leave for work until after 3:00. It doesn’t help that I’m still occasionally staying up late out of habit, but at least I’m catching up on stuff.
On Saturday, however, I had my alarm set for 10:00 am(8 hours after going to bed)… and I got out of bed shortly before 8:00 am. I GOT OUT OF BED. IN THE MORNING. AND I GOT THINGS DONE! You’d be surprised how many things you can’t do if you’re not awake during the day time. I set up some Christmas decorations(daylight!), I sawed some wood for a home project(I won’t wake neighbors with the noise!), I went to stores(They were open! I wasn’t limited to Wal-Mart!). Since I wasn’t using time that I should be using for sleep, I also crossed off a few to-do list items. My goal is to get used to starting my day at 7:00 am or earlier so that more of my waking hours will have daylight.

I know that my sleep schedule isn’t the most interesting thing to most people, but that is the news around here and this cartoonist is excited about it. I’d like to show you sketches, 3D models, demo footage of something animated and/or interactive, but it’s too soon to have anything to show. I have been watching more tutorials, though, and that will definitely help me do more things with 3D. I don’t plan on creating any games soon, but I am learning the Blender Game Engine for 2 non-game projects, one of which looks hopeful for January. This week, I plan to focus on watching more tutorials, watching movies, and sketching. If I have time, I’ll get started on building 3D characters and the website redesign.

With this schedule and a month before the comics resume, I could organize my cartooning much more efficiently by doing all of the month’s scripting and layout in 2 marathons(5-6 hours each), then all the sketching in 1-2 marathons, then all the inking in 1-2 marathons. By staying in one mode for longer periods of time, I can get in the groove and have a month’s worth of comics in one week.

I’m going to have a lot of days where I feel like I should be working on a comic. I’m having one of those days right now.
